These two stages get asked about more than almost any other part of the process, usually with some version of “is there anything I can do to prepare?” The honest answer is narrower than most applicants expect, and it’s worth being direct about that rather than implying otherwise.
What these stages generally assess
A psychological assessment typically involves a clinical interview and standardized instruments evaluating personality, emotional intelligence, and resilience, conducted by a psychologist retained by the agency. A medical examination checks baseline physical health — cardiovascular function, vision, hearing, and similar measures — against the demands of the role. Exact instruments, providers, and components vary by agency.
What’s within your control
- Rest. Arriving rested rather than depleted from other stages of the process is a real, legitimate factor in how you present.
- Honesty and internal consistency. Answering genuinely, and answering the same way across different phrasings of a similar question, is what these instruments are actually built to read — not any particular “correct” answer.
- Logistics. Knowing what to bring, what’s expected, and scheduling appointments with margin rather than rushing between stages.
- General health maintenance in the months before, not a crash effort in the final week.
What’s not within your control — and not worth trying to influence
The clinical judgment applied to your assessment, the specific instruments used, and the outcome itself belong entirely to the agency and its retained professionals. Trying to anticipate or “solve” a psychological assessment is itself a pattern these instruments are specifically designed to detect — it tends to produce a worse outcome than answering genuinely, not a better one.
What ETHOS explicitly will not do
ETHOS does not, and will not, teach techniques aimed at influencing a psychological assessment outcome, and provides no medical advice of any kind. This isn’t a training gap ETHOS intends to fill later — it’s a deliberate boundary. If you have genuine concerns about a health condition or a past mental-health history and how it relates to this process, that’s a conversation for a qualified professional or the agency directly, not a preparation resource.
